Choosing tyres for defence and civil off-road operations
Military and emergency response fleets specify tyres against a different brief to commercial operators. Availability matters more than economy, and the tyre has to perform across terrain the vehicle was not necessarily designed around.
Four requirements usually drive the choice:
Terrain versatility. A vehicle that runs sealed highway to a staging point, then unformed track, then soft sand or mud, needs one tyre that handles all of it. The X FORCE range is built for that mixed profile rather than optimised for a single surface.
Damage tolerance. Off-road operations expose sidewalls to rock, stump and debris strike. Casing robustness determines whether a strike ends the mission or not.
Pressure adaptability. Lowering pressure for soft ground and raising it for road transit gives markedly better traction and better tyre life than a fixed compromise. Our radial military range is compatible with TELEFLOW central tyre inflation systems, letting the crew adjust from the cab.
Load endurance at low speed. Armoured and heavily equipped vehicles run high axle loads at low average speeds, which loads the casing differently to a commercial application at the same mass.
